Celebrations Gallery & Shoppes in Pomfret, CT, invites you to Dynamic Duos: A Collaborative Exhibition from May 20 to July 3, 2011. Enjoy complimentary refreshments during the opening night's Meet the Artists Reception on Friday, May 20th from 5 to 8 PM. All are welcome to this free event.

Celebrations asked their artists to find a friend and play...The Dynamic Duos Exhibition will feature two artists working together to create a single work of original art. This exhibition allows artists to explore the creative process with a colleague or friend and perhaps step outside the canvas with a partner who works in a totally different medium or style. Collaborations are diverse and include pairs of local artists, artists from two different states, married teams, father & son, artists who are long-time friends and those who have just met.

Participating artists are Kate Bars, Meredith Berthiaume, Naomi Carpenter, Liviu Cupceancu, Janet Davies, Trudy Hylant, Esther Klahne, Donna O'Scolaigh Lange, Peter Lange, Anna Mancini, Elizabeth St. Hilaire Nelson, Brian Nilson, Tyler Nilson, David Pearson, Robin Maria Pedrero, Nora Robbins, Beth Rommel, Wolfgang Schweizer, Blanche Serban, M.K. Shaw, Kristen Stein, Regina Thomas, Robert Thomas, Susan Underwood, Sandra Weatherford, Ruth Welter, Barbara Zlotnick.

This exhibition will also commemorate Celebrations Gallery's 5th Anniversary. In just five years, Celebrations has been recognized by prominent media such as Yankee Magazine (#1 Art Gallery, "Best of New England Reader's Choice" Awards 2010), Connecticut Magazine, The Boston Globe, Boston Magazine's New England Travel Guide, Worcester Living, and WFSB's Better Connecticut Show.

Celebrations showcases & sells an eclectic collection of original artwork by over 40 local and regional artists, artisans and designers. The gallery is proud to support the local community through numerous, creative fundraising efforts throughout the year. "Chair-A-Tea" Recap

On January 22, Celebrations held a special "Chair-A-Tea" Party in our new Tea Room. (Blog post on Tea Room to come...) This special Tea Reception celebrated Habitat for Humanity of Northeast Connecticut's 15th Anniversary.

Celebrations donated $15 from each $30 ticket to Habitat. Celebrations' owner Jean Barton presented a check to Habitat Board Members Pegi Breckel & Judy Haines (shown here) from the "Chair-A-Tea" Party tickets plus sales of some of our Art Chairs, created by Celebrations' artists specifically for this benefit.

These donations are helping support Habitat's current build in Brooklyn, CT. The new homeowner and her family attended the "Chair-A-Tea" Party, as did a number of Habitat volunteers & board members plus other guests who wanted to support this great cause.

For this creative endeavor, Celebrations asked artists to step outside the box and let their imaginations run wild. Artists who work in all media participated, including jewelers and those who typically work on traditional canvases. The chairs were both functional and decorative and the artists did not fail to amaze us with their creativity and talent.

The Art Chairs created quite a buzz as we unveiled them one by one over a 15-week period. They were even featured on WFSB's "Better CT" show with Scot Haney & Kara Sundlun.

Celebrations wants to give many thanks to the following artists who participated in "Chair-A-Tea": Merideth Berthiaume, Emily Boosahda, Valerie Bruzzi, Janice Doner, Cheryl Economos, Jan Geoghegan, Jen Hart, Susan Rosenstone Larrow, Debra Metzger, Tim Oliver, Deborah Padden, Nora Robbins, Wolfgang Schweizer, David Stumpo, Margaret Young.

We also want to thank our wonderful customers who came out to see the chairs and especially to those who purchased them!

Celebrations team of Creative Directors is looking forward to volunteering on the Brooklyn, CT, build in the spring or summer when it's time to decorate the interior. They will probably be painting...maybe even creating a custom mural or use faux painting techniques in one of the rooms.

Habitat for Humanity Benefit

"Chair-A-Tea" is Celebrations' special art sale to benefit Habitat for Humanity of Northeast Connecticut. In honor of this organization's 15th Anniversary, 15 artists will each create an original Art Chair. Over 15 weeks, these chairs will be displayed and sold. Celebrations will donate a portion of each Art Chair sale to Habitat for Humanity of Northeast Connecticut.

We are unveiling a new Art Chair every Friday afternoon at 2PM. Stop by for tea & sweets and to see each new Art Chair in the continuing series. View pictures of the art chairs as we unveil them. The 15-week benefit will culminate in a "Chair-A-Tea Party" on January 22 (2-5PM) at Celebrations Tea Room. This special Tea Reception will cost $30 per person. Celebrations will donate $15 from each ticket to Habitat for Humanity of Northeast Connecticut. Celebrations will present a check to Northeast Connecticut Habitat for Humanity during the Chair-A-Tea Party. Celebrations’ goal for this campaign is to sell each and every chair in order to gift Habitat generously and support the current house being built in Brooklyn, CT.

Celebrations Gallery & Shoppes invites you to the 2nd Annual "Small Works: Artful Treasures" Art Exhibition & Sale.

In the tradition of many galleries during the holiday season, Celebrations' "Small Works" show is designed to entice customers to give the ultimate gift of original artwork as well as purchase a treasure for themselves. During this show, Celebrations will offer a variety of original, framed art less than 200 square inches, all priced under $200.

The "Small Works" Exhibition & Sale will run from November 6th - January 7th. There will be a "Meet the Artists" Reception on Saturday, November 6th from 2-5PM, featuring complimentary tea and sweets. Twenty-one different local and regional artists will be featured, working in a variety of media and styles including paintings, multimedia, woodworking, mosaics and photography plus creatively framed jewelry pieces.

2002--Driving along Rt 169, Pomfret, Quiet Corner, Connecticut… God’s country… Humming some quaint Cole Porter medley.

Passing by a lovely pink Bed & Breakfast, the name: Celebrations. A majestic fairytale castle. Is it real or am I dreaming, and it’s actually spun sugar?

I feel like celebrating. I also have an inner urge to meet the person who conceived of the name, surely a kindred spirit, in homage to the goddess of joie de vivre!

I step on the break, make a hasty “U-ie”, and gingerly drive down the curvy dirt driveway leading up to the beautiful edifice with the welcoming expansive wraparound porch and wraparound gardens.

Meet the owner, Jean Barton, who tells me the story of how she came to be innkeeper of this gorgeous Victorian mansion. In a nutshell, she was following up on a dream, turning it into a passion.

The story is interesting enough in itself, meanwhile I tell her about a women’s gathering, called Women’s Passion in Action, that I recently helped create at Water’s Edge Resort in Westbrook. An affair in which women could shine and give much-needed permission for other women to follow their bliss.

A distinct meant-to-be, our meeting on that glowing, pink-edged afternoon …

For years later, there I was, sitting at a beautifully appointed table at Celebrations, now a gallery voted #1 by Yankee Magazine, surrounded by glorious artwork and objets–d‘art—all tangible results of women pursuing their passions—signing my memoir, GATHERING ROSES, THORNS AND ALL, to interested women stopping by. Sharing with them stories of meant-to-bes. Connecting with women who have also experienced and learned to appreciate the roses-and-thorns nature of a fully-lived life. The exquisite pleasure of recognition!

Ah, the magic of the Ripple Effect!

What if I never made that totally unlawful U-ie? (By the way, I did make sure no one was coming in either direction!)

I would have missed all the magic…

No regrets. Not this time.

Then there are those times when I fail to listen to the little voice, fail to follow the inner urge to take an unprecedented step, take a risk, perhaps slightly reckless, and open a brand new door…

Running into a gust of wind instead of away from it.

They still haunt me in the waning hours.

More about those foibles another time.

Let’s not spoil the mood of this one!

Instead, sprinkle some confetti generously as you pass—and celebrate!

P.S. By the way, edifices can reinvent themselves also. Coming full circle, Celebrations, once a B & B now a gorgeous extensive gallery and gift shop, will be serving delightful afternoon teas starting November 13, 2010. Returning partially to its identity roots. Somewhat.

Celebrations Gallery & Shoppes is hosting “A Midsummer Celebration of Creativity” in the gallery’s Grand Foyer July 16 - August 29th. The show will celebrate the magic of the summer season. This exhibition of original artwork will be fun & playful as artists delve into their dreams and passions....and recall their perfect summertime memory.

Enjoy complimentary refreshments during the opening night’s “Meet the Artists” Reception on Friday, July 16 from 5-8PM. All are welcome to this free event.

CT Open House Day

Join us at Celebrations Gallery & Shoppes on Saturday, June 12th, for Connecticut's Annual Open House Day.

Come meet and chat with our local artists as they demonstrate their creative techniques. Several different artists will be on-site throughout the day, painting plein air (weather permitting, indoors if rain), including Cheryl Economos, Donna Lange, and Deborah Padden. Jewelry artists Janice Doner and Margaret Young will also be demonstrating their craft, and Kari Kline will be painting on silk. Susan Underwood will create lampwork glass beads using a propane/oxygen torch from 1-2:30PM.

From 11AM to 1PM, Artist Val Bruzzi will be on hand with a horse & rider model along with some of her art students from Cranston West High School who will also be painting in various media. Susan Rosenstone Larrow (shown here at last year's event) will be painting from 11 - 12:30PM.

Also enjoy complimentary tastings of Harney & Sons Iced Teas and Tea Forte Cocktail Infusions plus Celebrations’ own home-made biscotti.

Celebrations has formed an inspirational partnership with a brand new Northeastern Connecticut business. Glimpse of Gaia is an amazing new full-service florist that just opened on Main Street in downtown Putnam, CT.

We love Glimpse of Gaia because designer Stephanie Ewart-condon is a true artist and because both Stephanie and business partner/husband Sean are dedicated to originality and awesome customer service. Stephanie's arrangements are completely original, surprising and just plain "WOW"!

They also are dedicated to earth friendly practices, such as purchasing flowers from environmentally friendly wholesalers and recycling vases and other materials. Their shop is full of gorgeous flowers plus antiques, vintage vases, art, handmade crafts by local artisans and much more. Check out their beautifully restored space in downtown Putnam!

Glimpse of Gaia has been making arrangements in our artists' vases on a weekly basis (see above for an arrangement created in artist Sharon Hosley's contemporary terra cotta pottery, which sold the other day). If you purchase the artwork, you get to take home the arrangement as a beautiful bonus. Also, if you purchase a vase at Celebrations, you can bring it to Glimpse of Gaia at any time and they will create an arrangement in it at a 10% discount (please bring your Celebrations receipt.)

Boston Gift Show

This past Monday Jean, Deb, Jackie & I drove north to the Boston Gift Show. The weather was lousy outside but we had fun browsing the rows at the Convention Center. In a few weeks, our new purchases should be arriving! Jackie & I discovered and fell in love with the work of Seattle-based jewelry designer Kristen Ford, whose company is called Jewelry with Meaning.

Here's a little blurb from her website: "The Kristin Ford line of jewelry was established in 1994 with a passion for beautiful gems and respect for the energetic gifts each stone has to offer." Each piece of Kristen's jewelry comes with a tag that describes the stones used in the design and the special healing properties inherent in each one.

Jean was taken by Hancock Basket's line of "Peggy Fisher" handbags. We now carry these beautifully crafted classics from this well known New Hampshire company.

Deb, our scarf girl, discovered lots of lovely new designs and colors for spring. Come see her re-stocked "Scarf Closet." She's also incorporated beaded purses and handbags great for special occasions or just going out.

Spring Has Sprung

As far as we are concerned, spring is here. The grass on Celebrations front lawn is starting to green, the daffodils are poking through the dirt, and soon we'll fill the porch with garden decor. We're all itching to be outside, start turning the earth and listening to the birds herald a new season.

The change of seasons always means lots of new artwork at the gallery. Jan Geoghegan came last week with several new encaustics. We are certain--judging from reactions to the piece so far--"Regeneration" (shown here) won't be on our walls very long!

Dan Roy, another popular Celebrations artist, brought two new paintings the other day. We love his handsome peacock, shown here posing with sheep & crows against Dan's famous intense red sky.

Other new work has also recently arrived from Regina Thomas (mixed media), Carol Wontkowski (photography), Wolfgang Schweizer (jewelry, acrylics) and more coming soon!

New artist Deborah Padden's still life and floral oil paintings have already garnered rave reviews from Celebrations' visitors.

And new artist Kari Kline paints on silk for functional and wearable art, like the "Princess Pillow" shown here. Come check our new talent!

Cupcake Crazy

After seeing this photo of a 3D paper cupcake promoting a cupcake tasting contest for Valentine's Day at an art store in Rhode Island, I just had to go and check it out. I gladly made the hour drive just to see what new and fun things were there to to inspire me creatively.

While making the store sponsored make & take cupcake themed cards, I was chatting with one of the other ladies, and we got on the topic of Pomfret. She couldn't have been more enthusiastic about all the fun places to visit and enjoy here. I suggested that she check out Celebrations on "scenic" Rt. 169, and she told me that she had been here many times, and routinely brings friends to the Gallery.

How exciting to run into people who live an hour away, in another state and show such sincere exuberance for the place where you live and work. I have to say I felt a little puffed up with pride and gratitude for the many things that we have to offer here, and how hard this team works to make it the special place it is, and that it doesn't go unnoticed.

I left there inspired to create, share new ideas and of course bake cupcakes. Maybe I'll just stick to the paper kind.

Everyone at Celebrations certainly enjoyed the festivities this past weekend as our "Celebrating Romance" exhibit opened with two lovely receptions featuring complimentary champagne & sweet treats. The exhibit showcases original artwork with a love & romance twist and will run through the end of February.

Nora in the Big City

Happy New Year!

In December I had the opportunity to go to New York City for three days and it turned out to be an amazing time, just doing the simple things that the city has to offer around holiday time.

We attended an outdoor holiday market in Columbus Circle, super fun, and just when you think you've seen it all, there's another artistic surprise. That evening we got caught in the big snow storm that hit the city starting at 8 pm and were stuck walking, in dress clothes and shoes, 15 blocks in blizzard conditions, but hey so was everyone else!

The next morning, Central Park was alive with the color of bright snow clothes, and sleds along with the sounds of happy people of all ages sledding, skating and walking. The inconveniences of the previoius night's storm were all but a memory.

That evening we attended a free holiday concert at the Guggenheim. Vocals and Brass, it was beautiful as the singers sang as they walked the circular rotunda. The evening was finished off with creative highlight for me was taking in the Holiday windows at Bergdorf's. I was so inspired by the amount of creativity that went into each one. My favorite is the one constructed entirely out of paper. Wow is all I can say.

Our trip concluded with a stop at the hot chocolate bar in the Jacques Torres store. It was well worth the 30 block walk. I never would have thought to go there, but my friend Katarina, read about it in Cooking Light, so we decided to check it out, and I am so glad we did.

'Tis the Season

Wow, what a weekend! We were so busy and having a great time, all the while remaining truly grateful for all our wonderful new Celebrations' customers and always for our regular loyal ones.

Anyway, we had a huge selection of scarves in our "closet" display on the second floor. "Had" because by the end of the weekend, they were almost all sold! So we put in an emergency scarf order. It arrived the other day, and we are re-stocked with a variety of colors, styles and prices.

Everyone at Celebrations gives thanks for our friends, family, artists, customers, and each other. We are grateful for the continuing success and evolution of this creative, inspirational endeavor and to be able to share it with the world.

Thanks also to everyone who joined us for the "Small Works: Artful Treasures" Meet the Artists receptions this past weekend. The opening weekend was a huge success and a lot of fun. This show will continue through January 3rd.

We hope today's wicked wind doesn't keep you from trick-or-treating tonight! At least it is weirdly warm...

Today we received a slew of new artwork from one of our most popular artists, Regina Thomas, who works in mixed media/collage. Come see new work by this prolific artist.

We also have received a couple of gorgeous new pastels from Lynn Wrona. It's hard to keep Lynn's work on our walls, so come visit soon!

Our artists are currently delivering pieces for our upcoming "Small Works" show, so stay tuned for more information on this special holiday exhibition and sale.

An Anniversary

Columbus Day weekend was a special anniversary in the life of Celebrations. It was 10 years ago that the doors of Celebrations Inn were opened! And although the bed and breakfast portion of the business is no longer operating, who knew at the time that the tiny little gift shoppe would eventually expand into 10 rooms on two floors of this 1885 Queen Anne. So of course there is much reason to celebrate!

One of our frequent customers Rev. Jack Shackles, along with his buddy Lydia, came to celebrate and bless this occasion and the implementation of our computerized Point of Sales system, fondly named “Posy.” The blessing was so touching that I asked Jack if we could post it on Celebrations' Website for all to read…

This continues to be quite the adventure! I am grateful for the many friendships that have developed along the way with enthusiastic and supportive customers, talented artists, local business partnerships, and of course the fabulous Celebrations Creative Directors Team. Who knew at the time how relationships would expand and develop?!?

Nine years ago this very weekend, Deb started here helping out with the bed and breakfast and still supports Celebrations in operating smoothly. Their dream of opening a tea room is moving up the priority list. In 2003, when Jackie approached me with the concept of having a one day “Artists Gathering Celebration” who knew that it would eventually expand into this. And through the years, Cris and Jean worked together promoting local tourism as well as their B&Bs. The friendship that Nora and I share began through an invitation to her tea party when several people told her we just had to meet.

There have been many others as well, supportive little angels stepping in to assist moving things forward. And then there is the amazing and unending support from my husband Bill. He is a true partner in every sense of the word!

Chocolate has arrived!

Chocolate lovers, be happy that summer is over so we can again carry chocolate (without fear of it melting!).

Happy Labor Day

Labor Day implies the end of summer but at Celebrations, we greet it as a breath of fresh, cooler air and a look forward to our busy fall foliage season. Soon we will be hanging seasonal artwork, so come look for vivid fall colors and harvest themes. John Volpacchio has delivered hand blown glass pumpkins and we have wonderfully scented new candles from Root, in pumpkin spice, mulled cider and more, plus more new items arriving all the time.

We also welcome several new artists this month, including watercolorist Mary Green La Forge, whose "works captures the freshness and light of the natural environment with rich yet subtle transparent colors of her watercolors and the brilliant colors of her oils. The results are impressionistic paintings that go beyond realism to capture a moment in time."

We will write more about artist Wolfgang Schweizer, who works in acrylic and pen plus jewelry made of aluminum, brass and copper and handpainted boxes, next week.

Special touches and surprises

I recently visited Nantucket with my family for a little R&R. The Veranda House, where we stayed, is a charming guest house in the middle of town. I was taken off guard by the special little touches and efforts made to create a memorable experience (and to secure a return visit)!

Instead of the traditional “chocolate on the pillow” gesture, we found a post card bearing a Closing Day Thought and a red licorice Twizzler. A new twist for turn-down service… sweet and unexpected.

Around every corner we discovered simple but much appreciated touches – from an old fashioned penny candy jar filled with cinnamon hots, to large individual carafes of cucumber and strawberry water. What occurred to me was how much thought must have gone into this. It all looked so effortless, yet the impact was impressive. Perhaps I was more attuned and grateful because of my experience at Celebrations. Driving passions for us at Celebrations are the special touches and elements of surprise.

Just like The Veranda House, our regular “guests” are always excited to visit because we always have something new and fun to share. We invite our new customers to visit and enjoy the experience of Celebrations! From our ever-changing inventory to our friendly customer service (including directions and touring suggestions) to the colorful ribbons we curl to adorn our complimentary festive packaging, we want to make your visit memorable.

It’s no surprise to me that both The Veranda House and Celebrations have been the recipients of Yankee Magazine’s Editor’s Choice Award!

France & Welcome to new artist Naomi Carpenter

I'm back from France! A wonderful trip but I'm glad to be home. One observation: the museums, of course, are amazing, and there are many tiny galleries that usually feature one or several artists--often in one medium, such as paintings or jewelry or ceramics. There are also numerous exhibitions in public places that last a few weeks.

However, during my 2-week trip in Burgundy and Paris I saw nothing like Celebrations. We are so fortunate to have this large space and so many talented local & regional artists working in so many media to fill the shelves and walls . . .

Summer-time at Celebrations

Deb has created an amazing summer-time display of handblown fish by John Volpacchio and fused glass trays by Nancy McGrath to bring some summer decor into your home as well as a diverse selection of perfect jewelry to show off your tan.

The gorgeous weather here in Connecticut has people turning attention back to their gardens. We have a good selection of our colorful garden stakes still available to perk up your garden as well as decorative bells in various tones, shapes, sizes by Ed Kidera and whimsical sculptured characters created by Bill Herzfeld, all made from recycled materials.

Our weekly tea tastings continue. This weekend we are tasting Harney’s Pomegranate Oolong iced tea. Light and fresh - Jean's current flavor. Tea Forte’s cocktail infusions continue to be very popular. We created our own beverage with the lavender-citrus infused in vodka by mixing it with a sparkling pink-lemonade. Light, tasty and oh so pretty to look at! And better yet - they are 10% off when you purchase them.

Cris is vacationing in France the next couple of weeks catching some of the Tour-de-France cycling action. We are all so jealous!

Welcome to Celebrations Gallery & Shoppes!

This is our first blog post. It's late June in northeastern Connecticut, although the month has felt a lot like April. Today the sun is attempting to peek out and shine on our great collection of colorful & whimsical garden ornaments.

We just got new inventory from Haw Creek Forge (handcrafted copper & enamel butterflies, bugs & more) and new garden chimes made by artist Ed Kidera. When the wind blows hard, we have music on the lawn. He shapes and cuts his bells for different pitches. Some sound like church bells and others like ships' bells. Come visit, look & listen!

Celebrations is run by a team of "Creative Directors"--5 women who together keep things running smoothly and make sure everyone (customers, artists, each other, spouses) is happy and creatively inspired. We hope to take turns posting.
